This project utilises ‘play’ to develop an app concept for children that encourage connection in the family.

The problem of increased isolation and the importance of virtual connection during the COVID-19 pandemic was a focus of this project. Our app centers around cooking and food. From our surveys, and questionnaires, a rather common aspect we encountered was food, and how families congregate in the kitchen, or around the dinner table.

Although cooking is a fun and educational activity, we were worried about children encountering dangerous appliances in the kitchen — we included a section where the parents’ permission is required for the child to cook, ensuring that there is parental supervision when this happens. We included a section for ‘virtual cooking’ — a tool by which the child can practice their recipe of choice without fear of these dangerous appliances or lack of parental presence.

We made sure to focus on multiple, bright colours to lock the attention of our younger audience, while staying away from highly saturated colours. Our logo, icons, and illustrations were made to be realistic, since children’s interpretation skills of highly refined, simplified, ‘flat’ icons can become problematic when dealing with food items or kitchen utensils.

This project was completed in collaboration with Tamica Scrivens.
